    Bukkit has Fallen!

After the Bukkit staff discovered Mojang's ownership of the nonprofit organization, many of the once devout followers and developers have issued their goodbyes and sentiments about the EULA fiasco as well as the secret arrangement. Mojang's road ahead is no doubt a turbulent one. Coupled with the enormous burden of maintaining Bukkit and their new legal executioners, their expenses will soon be mounting higher than ever before. Perhaps 1.8 will be the final version after all?

Also, I wonder... If Mojang were to, say, go under... Would we still be bound by their EULA?

    No.

However, if Mojang does "go under," so will authentication servers. And skin servers. And Username-from-UUID servers. Minecraft servers would be unplayable.

That's an issue that will no doubt prove problematic SOME time in the future. The cracked Minecraft clients seem to work out well enough, though... Not my favorite way to get on a server, but with the right server side authentication plugins, there shouldn't be any issues with accessing servers without auth servers. As for skins... Well, I suppose someone could jury rig some sort of skin system through a third party.
